Dental Bridge Treatment

Do you have missing, broken, or decaying teeth? Are you becoming increasingly self-conscious about the way you look with the condition of your teeth and smile? If so, you may benefit from the use of a dental bridge. Dental bridges can help restore your smile and stay confident as your teeth age. They are easy and convenient to wear, and they last a significant amount of time as long as you care for them properly. If you think you qualify for a dental bridge or would like to know more information about them, keep reading below.

What is a Dental Bridge?

As the name suggests, a dental bridge will literally connect, or bridge, the gap between two or more teeth. They are composed of two dental crowns that lay atop abutment teeth. A dental crown is a cap that goes on top of one tooth. Having one dental crown on either side of a gap in your teeth allows the remainder of the bridge to stay in place, as this is connected to both crowns.

Essentially, a dental bridge is a row of crowns that are held in place by connecting to caps on two abutment teeth. An abutment tooth is what the anchoring teeth are called. Before you receive a dental bridge, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the different kinds of bridges available.

Types of Dental Bridges

There are many different types of dental bridges, and each may be more beneficial for some than others.

The first type of dental bridge is called a traditional bridge. These are the ones described above – they connect to two teeth bordering the gap, capped with dental crowns, and have a pontic between them.

A pontic is what a false tooth is called. These are the most common form of a dental bridge and are made of ceramic or metal. This option is only possible if there are two teeth to ground the pontic with. If there is only one tooth available to stabilize the pontic with, a cantilever bridge is used.

The last type of bridge is called a Maryland Bonded Bridge; these are bridges that are stabilized for a metal or porcelain framework. Understanding the different types of dental bridges available is difficult, as they each require different conditions. The best way to familiarize yourself with them is by talking to your dentist.

Dental Bridge Process

Getting a dental bridge is not a short process. It requires multiple visits and follow up appointments to ensure productivity of the bridge. When you and your dentist agree that a it is the best option for you, a first appointment must be set. During this first appointment, the abutment teeth, or the stabilizing teeth, will be prepared for the dental crown attachments.

This involves the removal of a portion of the teeth’s enamel. Impressions of these teeth are taken to craft the specific crown needed for each tooth. The dentist will give you a temporary bride to protect this area of the mouth.

After this appointment, a second one is needed. Here, your new porcelain crafted bridge will be affixed to the abutments in your mouth. After this appointment, multiple appointments will be needed to check the fit and bite of the bridge.
