Mini-Dental Implants

For those who are missing teeth, life can feel like a struggle. If you’re missing a tooth, you may feel self-conscious and you may not be able to carry out everyday functions as you’d like. For example, chewing certain foods may pose as a difficulty, and you may not want to smile for pictures. This can be difficult. Thankfully, there is a solution for you – dental implants. Unfortunately, some people may not want or be eligible for traditional dental implants. For those individuals, another option is available, and they’re known as mini-dental implants.

Dental Implants

Before we get to what a mini-dental implant is, you must first understand what a traditional dental implant is. Traditional dental implants are long metal screws that act as the root of a tooth. They are inserted deep into the jawbone and provide structure for the surrounding area. Dental implants are best for those with a strong foundational jawbone. For those who may not have the strongest surrounding bone, receiving dental implants may be difficult. Instead, the option for mini dental implants may be more ideal.

Mini-Dental Implants

Mini-Dental Implants Todd Shatkin DDS Implant Dentist in Buffalo, NY 2Mini-dental implants, as the name suggests, are essentially smaller versions of the traditional dental implant. They tend to have the same structure as the traditional version, but they are one unit instead of two. Dental implants consist of the faux root and an abutment piece, while a mini-dental implant is one singular piece. The root part is a thin screw that gets inserted into the jawbone and gumline, and the opposite side is a small ball joint. All in all, compared to the traditional dental implant, the mini implants are much thinner, have a more pointed end, and don’t require an abutment piece.

Implantation Process

The implantation process of a mini-dental implant is similar to that of a traditional dental implant, but they vary slightly. First, a small incision is made in your gumline where the implant will be placed. Following this, small holes are drilled into the jawbone where the posts are then placed. Your gums are sutured closed around the implant to ensure proper healing. After some time, your bone will begin growing around the implant which fully secures it in place. The healing process of mini-dental implants is shorter than that of a traditional implant due to the smaller size, which is ideal for many.

Caring for your Mini-Dental Implants

After you receive mini-dental implants, after care is necessary to prevent infection or damage. Be sure to brush the post as you do with your normal teeth. The area around the dental implant will collect plaque and bacteria like your permanent teeth do, and cleaning the area is vital to prevent infection. Additionally, avoid eating hard, sticky, or potentially damaging foods for at least a week after you receive your implant. Doing so allows your implant to heal properly and not become damaged by excessive force. Your dentist will provide you with helpful information about how to care for your mini-dental implant after the procedure, and it’s important you follow these closely.
