Both options come with advantages and disadvantages, but a new technique, mini dental implants, combines the benefits of both and offers a great alternative to teeth replacement.
What are Mini Dental Implants?
Mini dental implant treatment combines the benefits of dentures with the benefits of implants. Dentures have always been a low-cost way to replace lost teeth, but they can be uncomfortable and, because they are removable, can slip or fall out when chewing or talking. How are Mini Dental Implants Placed?
Similar to traditional implant placement, a small incision is made into the gum and a hole is drilled into the jawbone. The mini dental implant posts are placed into the bone and the dentist sutures the gums closed. Mini dental implant placement is slightly less invasive than traditional implants and requires no time to heal without your dentures in place. Once the procedure is complete, your dentures can be put into place immediately. While you may experience some discomfort for a few days, you should be able to resume normal activity immediately.
Securing and Removing Your Dentures
Securing your dentures into place with mini dental implants is quick and easy. Simply hold your denture on each outer side and gently place the denture on top of the posts. Ensure that the O-rings are positioned over the posts. With light pressure, snap the denture down into place.
To remove your dentures for cleaning, simply put each thumb underneath each side of the denture and gently push up, freeing them from the post. Use care to apply pressure equally to both sides.
How Do You Care For Your Dental Implants?
Caring for your mini dental implant begins with traditional denture cleaning. Remove and clean your dentures as instructed by your dentist. In addition to cleaning your dentures, you must clean and take care of the implants. Brushing the posts, as you would natural teeth, helps remove plaque and bacteria that can build up. Make sure to thoroughly clean and brush both the ball of each implant and around the O-rings. Keeping these areas clean helps to ensure your dentures will sit properly and stay in place.
