We are thrilled to announce that Daemen University will soon be offering full accreditation in the future in what is to be called Shatkin College of Dentistry.
When this comes to fruition, Daemen will be one of only two institutions in WNY that will offer higher education for a doctorate in dentistry.
The projected plan to open Shatkin College of Dentistry is for the fall semester of 2023. The last step before the facility is opened includes receiving accreditation from the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and the approval of the New York State Education Department (NYSED).
The namesake of this college, Dr. Todd Shatkin, DDS has his dental facilities located up the street from Daemen’s main campus. He will be providing the necessities to facilitate this dental program.
Once the program receives the approval necessary to debut, it will join the UB School of Dental Medicine in the exclusive club to provide students in the Buffalo area to become accredited in dentistry.
The three most common undergraduate majors at Daemen University include Registered Nursing, Natural Sciences, and Health and Wellness. The university has a good reputation for these programs.
When this program gets all the approval needed, students who want to come to Buffalo or stay local in their pursuit to become a Doctor of Dental Surgery will have an option of schools. This has not been the case since UB has been the only program that students could go to for dentistry.
Dr. Todd Shatkin stated that it is his goal to offer students a chance to have a “unique educational experience” in what he hopes will become one of the best dental schools in the country.
The efforts to begin this program began in 2021 when the college filed with CODA and applied with NYSED for approval. The anticipated momentum towards making this program a reality has excited both Dr. Shatkin’s team and Daemen, which recently became a university.
The plan is set in motion for this to be a three-year program that runs year-round. This is instead of a four-year program like most dental programs around the country.
The residencies that students need to complete as per the New York State mandate can be done at dental facilities around NYS.
Shatkin College of Dentistry will have facilities at Daemen’s main campus in Amherst as well as the facilities that will be built near Dr. Shatkin’s offices in Amherst. The Amherst Town Board is in discussions about the planning of this build.
